Thousand Islands: Boat Cruises, Boldt Castle and the Border

The Thousand Islands look like one postcard until you buy a ticket. Stay on a scenic cruise from Gananoque or Rockport and you can spend an hour among channels and cottages without clearing a border. Book a Boldt Castle stopover and you are landing on Heart Island, New York - United States soil - with US Customs and Border Protection hours that shut at 5:30 p.m. in season.

That single fork decides whether you need a passport day or a camera day. Figures below were checked on 24 August 2026; boat products and castle hours are seasonal, so confirm your sailing before you drive out from Kingston or further along the corridor.

Scenic versus stopover - decide first

If anyone in your group lacks a passport or NEXUS-style credential accepted for this mode, buy the scenic product and stop arguing. You’ll still get the castle on camera from the water.

The practical test is boring and it works: before you leave the hotel, ask who is actually boarding the stopover boat and whether each person is carrying original ID. If the answer wobbles, switch the booking to scenic while you’re still on Wi-Fi. Operators can move you between products more easily before departure than after the gangway closes.

Weather matters more than brochures admit. A calm August morning on the St. Lawrence is a different product from a whitecap afternoon when the upper deck is closed and everyone crowds the cabin. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take the shorter scenic hour first and save the five-hour castle day for a settled forecast.

Boldt Castle sits in the United States

George Boldt’s unfinished Rhine-style house stands on Heart Island in Alexandria Bay, New York. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority runs it as a seasonal attraction, accessible only by water. For 2026 the published window is 9 May to 12 October, daily 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with the admissions booth closing an hour earlier.

Castle admission in US dollars: Adult $14 (13+), Child $10 (5-12), infants 4 and under free. The Yacht House is separate ($8.50 / $6), or buy the package ($17 / $10). They take major cards and US cash - Canadian debit that “usually works” is not a plan.

Canadian visitors: Boldt Castle is an official Port of Entry. CBP hours start at 10:30 a.m. and run to 5:30 p.m. The operator’s own page says passengers arriving from Canada must provide proper identification and points you to cbp.gov. That isn’t fine print for someone else, and the cruise companies set a harder line than CBP’s own minimum: both Gananoque and Rockport require a valid passport or NEXUS card for a Boldt Castle stopover, no exceptions. CBP’s own rules would also accept a passport card or an enhanced driver’s licence by water - neither operator does. Show up at the dock with only an EDL and you can be turned away before CBP ever gets involved.

Third-country passports need their own US entry rules checked before you pay for a castle ticket. Most Visa Waiver Program nationalities - the UK, Australia, EU countries and more - now need an approved ESTA, because CBP no longer accepts the old paper Visa Waiver form. The ESTA application itself has cost US$40 since a fee rise on 30 September 2025, so budget it before you book, not at the dock. A scenic cruise that never docks is the safe fallback for anyone still sorting out documents.

One more timing trap: castle closing time and CBP closing time are not the same clock. The attraction may still be open while the Port of Entry is winding down. Build your island visit so you’re not negotiating a late clearance with tired kids and a boat whistle. There’s a video-phone check-in at Alexandria Bay Municipal Dock for individuals arriving by boat outside booth hours, but no cruise company builds that into its schedule - it won’t rescue you if your tour boat is simply running late.

Rules and accepted documents can change - confirm what your nationality needs on cbp.gov before you book a stopover ticket, and check travel.gc.ca if you’re travelling on a Canadian passport. Where the boats leave - Gananoque and Rockport

On the Canadian shore the two names Boldt Castle itself lists are Gananoque City Cruises and Rockport Cruises. Gananoque is the larger town base with more restaurants and parking drama on peak Saturdays; Rockport sits closer to the densest island cluster on the Thousand Islands Parkway and feels like a purpose-built dock village. Both sell short scenic loops and longer castle products. US-side boats also leave from Alexandria Bay and Clayton if you’re already overnighting in New York.

Driving from Kingston, Gananoque is the default first stop; Rockport is a little farther east along the parkway when you want the boat to hit island density sooner. Neither embarkation replaces checking what your ticket includes. A three-hour sightseeing loop that circles Heart Island without landing is not the same purchase as a stopover that puts you through CBP.

Rockport and Gananoque - the hard numbers

Rockport publishes a full 2026 card, and the products split cleanly by whether they land on Heart Island.

Family pass on the 1-hour is C$116 (2 adults + 2 children), also plus HST. The pattern that matters: every Rockport product that actually lands on Heart Island folds castle admission into the cruise fare - you’re not meant to buy a second ticket at the door.

Gananoque runs the same split: a 1-hour scenic from about CA$37 and the 5-Hour Boldt Castle Stopover from about CA$84, with roughly two hours ashore and admission included (its page doesn’t state the tax basis, so you’ll want to confirm the total at checkout). Gananoque’s own booking page is blunt about documents: “all passengers require a valid passport, and/or Nexus card to board this cruise - there are NO exceptions.” Both fares move with demand and the season, so run the same date through the operator site and Viator side by side rather than budgeting off either number alone.

Which cruise to book

Half day, no documents drama - Rockport’s one-hour scenic or its 3-hour Two Castle non-stop. Neither one lands, so neither one needs a passport.

You want the castle interior - book the 4-hour Boldt Castle Stopover (or Gananoque’s 5-hour version): roughly two hours ashore, admission already folded into the fare. Carry the passport or NEXUS card the operator asks for - not just whatever CBP would technically accept - and aim to clear the island while the Port of Entry is still open. Build buffer; don’t take the last possible boat “because the website said 6:30.”

Two castles or a long river day - Rockport’s 6-hour Boldt-and-Singer tour, only if everyone’s carrying a passport or NEXUS card and can handle six hours on the water. Otherwise split it: scenic today, castle tomorrow.

Base yourself in Kingston when limestone streets and Fort Henry share the same trip, or stay closer to Gananoque when the boat is the whole point. The wider Ontario guide covers the rest of the corridor.

Border-day packing list

• A valid passport or NEXUS card - both Gananoque and Rockport say plainly there are no exceptions on a Boldt Castle stopover, even though CBP itself would also take a passport card or enhanced licence by water. Photos of passports aren’t documents.
• US cash or a card that works in the US for the Yacht House, snacks and souvenirs - castle admission is usually already folded into a stopover fare, but check your specific ticket before assuming it.
• A watch set to the Port of Entry, not the castle closing time. CBP on the island is listed 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; the castle itself may stay open later.
• A backup scenic plan if someone in the group forgot ID - walk to the ticket desk and switch products before you board, not after the boat leaves Canadian water.
• Weather layer and non-slip shoes - granite docks and river wind aren’t theoretical.

If you can tick that list without improvising, the stopover’s worth it. If you can’t, the one-hour scenic cruise isn’t a consolation prize - it’s the version of the Thousand Islands most visitors actually enjoy.
