Vancouver to Whistler: Shuttle, Bus and the Sea-to-Sky Drive
Vancouver to Whistler 2026: YVR Skylynx from C$32 downtown or C$55 from the airport, Whistler Shuttle hotel drops from C$79, or drive Hwy 99.
Whistler is about 120 km north of Vancouver on Highway 99, the Sea-to-Sky Highway - usually 1.5 to 2 hours from downtown, closer to 2.5 hours from YVR once you clear the airport roads. You can ride a scheduled coach (YVR Skylynx), book a hotel-drop shuttle from the airport (Whistler Shuttle), or rent a car and stop wherever the light hits Howe Sound. Fares below were checked on 11 August 2026 - confirm before you book, because ski Fridays and bike-park Saturdays sell out.

There is no train and no public intercity bus that behaves like a city fare. Skylynx is the high-frequency coach; Whistler Shuttle is the door-to-hotel product from the airport. One summer 2026 detail that trips people who read last year’s forums: Whistler Shuttle’s downtown Vancouver shared service is a winter-only service by design, not a seasonal gap - from town, Skylynx is the scheduled option unless you pay for a private charter.
If you’re still sorting the city end of the trip, our Vancouver guide and airport-to-downtown page cover the curb choices at YVR. From here on, assume Whistler is the destination.
Option 1: YVR Skylynx scheduled coach
YVR Skylynx is the official airport partner coach between YVR, downtown Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler. On the operator’s prices page as of August 2026, a Standard adult one-way from downtown is C$32 (round-trip C$42). From the airport it’s C$55 one-way (C$75 return). Flexible tickets cost a few dollars more and stay changeable or refundable until 24 hours before the departure day; Standard tickets are neither. Ages 6-12 pay half; under-6s ride free.
Express skips the mid-route stops: from YVR it’s C$65 one-way / C$85 return on Standard pricing (Flexible C$70 / C$90). Executive is the wide-seat coach at C$85 one-way from the airport (C$115 return), and every Executive seat is sold as Flexible. First bike or ski set is free; extras and extra bags run C$10 each on the operator’s published add-on list.
The published timetable stacks Standard departures through the day - a sample northbound Standard leaves YVR at 07:00, downtown at 08:00, and reaches Whistler Gateway Loop at 10:00, with a last Standard out of YVR at 19:30 arriving 22:30. Meet at the International Arrivals kiosk (Bus Bay 9), on Melville Street outside the Hyatt Regency downtown, or - by reservation - at Squamish Adventure Centre or Creekside. Whistler drops at the Gateway Loop by the Visitor Centre, not at every hotel door. Book ski weekends ahead; the late airport runs are the ones that save a Vancouver night when your flight lands after dinner.
Option 2: Whistler Shuttle hotel drop from YVR
Whistler Shuttle is the product built around airport meet-and-greet and hotel or condo drop-offs in Whistler. For travel in the published season - 20 April to 25 November in 2026 - an adult one-way is C$79, a round-trip C$142.20 after the operator’s 10% return discount. Children 6-12 are C$35 / C$63; children five and under free. Winter (26 November 2026 to 4 April 2027) jumps to C$125 one-way for adults, with an early-book cut if you lock it in by 15 November 2026.
You’re paying roughly C$20 more than Skylynx’s Flexible airport fare in summer for the door-to-door piece: listed Whistler hotels and condos are in the base price; a private address adds C$40, and off-site condo key pickup is another C$40 if your rental has no front desk. Two suitcases, one carry-on and a ski or golf bag are included per person; extra bags are C$15. Vehicles are vans, minibuses or coaches depending on the day’s load - no washroom, no wifi (the operator points out that Sea-to-Sky cell coverage is patchy, so “free wifi” on this road promises more than it delivers). Book more than 72 hours out if you want their wait-time guarantee after you clear customs.
Use this when you’re flying into YVR with luggage and a booked Whistler address. Use Skylynx when you’re already downtown, or when Gateway Loop plus a short WAVE bus ride is fine. For which neighbourhood to book, see where to stay in Whistler.
Option 3: rent and drive the Sea-to-Sky
The drive is the trip for a lot of people: Highway 99 north past Horseshoe Bay, along Howe Sound, through Squamish, then into the Coast Mountains. From downtown Vancouver you’re looking at about 1.5 to 2 hours in clear traffic; from YVR plan closer to 2.5 hours and 136 km. There is no alternate highway - a crash or rockslide means you wait.
Easy pulls: Shannon Falls, the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish (adult online ticket C$73.95 on the operator’s last network check), and Brandywine Falls further north. A rental wins when you want those stops, a grocery run in Squamish, or a same-day out-and-back without matching a coach clock.
One rule catches visitors who grab a cheap airport compact for a January ski week. British Columbia requires winter tires or chains on designated routes from 1 October; on the Sea-to-Sky calendar used across our Whistler guide that window runs through 31 March (many other BC mountain routes extend to 30 April). The passenger-vehicle fine is C$121, and an M+S marking meets the legal minimum, but the three-peak snowflake grips better on snow and ice. Confirm winter fitment at the counter before you leave YVR - our renting a car in Canada checklist covers the provincial rulebooks, and car rental at Vancouver Airport covers counter hours and what to ask for.
Friday evenings in ski season and Sunday returns are when Highway 99 turns into a parking lot. If your flight is tight, the coach starts looking cheaper than a white-knuckle drive in wet snow.
Which ride to book
You land at YVR and want a hotel door in Whistler - Whistler Shuttle. The C$79 summer adult fare is the door-to-door premium over Skylynx, and winter’s C$125 is what you pay for not driving ice at night.
You’re already downtown, or Gateway Loop is fine - YVR Skylynx Standard or Flexible. C$32 from Melville Street is the cheapest honest seat on the corridor; bump to Express from the airport if you want the nonstop sprinter timing.
You want Shannon Falls, the gondola, or three people splitting costs - rent. Two adult Skylynx airport returns already approach a compact’s weekend rate before fuel, and a car is the only way to treat the Sea-to-Sky as a scenic day rather than a transfer.
Book the Whistler bed before the transport. Once the address is fixed, you’ll know whether you need a hotel-drop shuttle or a simple Gateway Loop coach - and our British Columbia overview places the drive in the wider coastal loop.
